Description

Soviet snipers played a crucial role on the Eastern Front during the Second World War, with over 400,000 individuals receiving sniper training. Both men and women served in this capacity—notably Lyudmila Pavlichenko, credited with 309 confirmed kills, and Vasily Zaitsev, famed for his actions at Stalingrad.

Soviet doctrine emphasised snipers as force multipliers, targeting enemy officers, machine gunners, and observers to disrupt command and control. Most used Mosin–Nagant 1891/30 rifles fitted with PU scopes, selected for accuracy and ruggedness. Scouts and snipers often operated in pairs, with a spotter assisting the shooter. Camouflage, patience, and marksmanship were essential skills, and many snipers were trained through the DOSAAF programme. Female snipers were particularly valued for their discipline and precision.

Soviet snipers were most effective during defensive operations (1941–43), but continued to support offensives later in the war. Their legacy influenced post-war Soviet doctrine and inspired numerous cultural depictions and military reforms.
