Description

The SPA TM‑40 was an Italian artillery tractor developed in 1940 by Società Piemontese Automobili (SPA) to improve the mobility of Italy’s field guns during the Second World War. Built on the chassis of the reliable TL‑37 light tractor, the TM‑40 featured four‑wheel drive, good ground clearance, and a compact, robust design that allowed it to tow medium artillery pieces such as the 75/27 and 100/17 guns across difficult terrain.

The vehicle was powered by a 52‑horsepower petrol engine, giving it modest speed but dependable pulling power. Its crew compartment was partially enclosed, offering limited protection from the elements but no armour. Although the TM‑40 performed well mechanically, Italy’s restricted industrial capacity meant that only a relatively small number were produced.

TM‑40 tractors served mainly in North Africa and the Balkans, where their off‑road capability proved valuable. Despite their limited numbers, they contributed meaningfully to Italian artillery operations throughout the war.
