Description
The T18 Boarhound was a heavy armoured car developed in the United States for British use during the Second World War. Designed by Yellow Coach and built by General Motors, it was an unusually large and heavily protected vehicle for its class, weighing over 26 tonnes and featuring substantial armour more typical of a light tank. Armed with a 37 mm main gun and multiple machine guns, it was intended to provide long‑range reconnaissance and support in desert conditions.
Despite its promising specifications, the Boarhound proved impractical in service. Its considerable weight made it slow and difficult to manoeuvre, especially off‑road, and it struggled to keep pace with faster, more agile vehicles needed for reconnaissance roles. Production was also complex and expensive, leading to delays and limited output. As a result, the British Army cancelled most of its order, and only around 30 vehicles were completed.
Those that did reach North Africa saw limited operational use, mainly with the U.S. Army for evaluation and with British forces in secondary roles. The Boarhound never achieved widespread deployment and is often remembered as an ambitious but ultimately unsuccessful attempt to create a heavily armoured wheeled fighting vehicle during the war.
