Description
The Type 4 Ka-Tsu was an amphibious landing craft developed by the Imperial Japanese Navy during World War II. Designed in response to the challenges faced in the Solomon Islands campaign, the Ka-Tsu was intended to transport cargo and troops from submarines to shore. The vehicle was 11 meters long, 4 meters wide, and 2.25 meters high, weighing 16 tons. It was powered by a 62-horsepower gasoline engine housed in a watertight compartment, allowing it to operate both on land and in water.
The Ka-Tsu featured light armour, with a maximum thickness of 10 mm, and was equipped with two 13 mm machine guns for defence. Its most notable feature was the ability to carry two Type 93 torpedoes, which could be launched from the vehicle to attack enemy ships anchored in shallow water. The Ka-Tsu’s design allowed it to be launched from submarines, making it a versatile tool for amphibious operations.
Despite its innovative design, only 49 units were produced, and the Ka-Tsu saw limited use during the war. Its primary role was to support amphibious landings and resupply missions, but it was also considered for offensive operations against Allied ships.
