Description
The Type 4 Ke-To was a light tank developed by the Imperial Japanese Army during World War II. Introduced in 1944, it was designed as an improved version of the Type 95 Ha-Go light tank, addressing its shortcomings in armour and firepower. The Ke-To featured a more powerful Type 1 37 mm tank gun, which provided better anti-tank capabilities compared to the Ha-Go’s 37 mm gun.
The tank was powered by a Mitsubishi Type 100 air-cooled diesel engine, producing 130 horsepower, allowing it to reach speeds of up to 50 km/h. The Ke-To had a crew of three: a commander/gunner, a driver, and a machine gunner. Its armour ranged from 6 to 16 mm, offering basic protection against small arms fire and shrapnel.
Despite its improved design, the Ke-To saw limited production, with only around 29 units built. The tank was primarily intended for use in the defence of the Japanese home islands, but it saw limited combat action due to the late stage of the war and Japan’s deteriorating industrial capacity.
