Type 89 150mm howitzer (Japanese)

Description

The Japanese Type 89 150mm howitzer was a heavy artillery piece developed by the Imperial Japanese Army in 1929. It was designated as the Type 89 to mark the 2589th year of the Japanese imperial calendar. This weapon was designed to provide long-range firepower for heavy artillery units and was widely used during the Second Sino-Japanese War and World War II.

The Type 89 featured a hydro-pneumatic recoil system and an interrupted screw breechblock mechanism. It was mounted on a split-box trail carriage with detachable spades, allowing for stability during firing. The howitzer fired a variety of shells, including high-explosive, armour-piercing, shrapnel, and illumination rounds. With a maximum range of approximately 19,900 metres, it was capable of delivering effective fire support over considerable distances. However, its rate of fire was limited to two rounds per minute.

Despite its effectiveness, the Type 89 had certain limitations. It required an eight-ton prime mover for transport and had to be disassembled into two loads for travel, which made its deployment time-consuming. While it was less efficient than some contemporary heavy artillery pieces, its reliability and adaptability ensured its continued use throughout the Pacific War. The Type 89 remains a notable example of Japanese artillery design during the interwar and wartime periods.
