Description
The Type 89 I-Go was a medium tank used by the Imperial Japanese Army during the interwar period and World War II. Developed in the late 1920s, it was one of Japan’s first domestically produced tanks and played a significant role in the early development of Japanese armoured forces. The Type 89 was designed to support infantry and provide firepower against enemy fortifications and machine gun nests.
The tank was powered by a Mitsubishi A6120VD air-cooled diesel engine, producing 120 horsepower, which allowed it to reach speeds of up to 26 km/h. The Type 89 had a crew of four and was armed with a Type 90 57 mm tank gun as its main armament, along with two Type 91 6.5 mm machine guns for secondary armament. The tank’s armour ranged from 6 to 17 mm, providing basic protection against small arms fire and shrapnel.
The Type 89 saw extensive service in various conflicts, including the Second Sino-Japanese War and the early stages of World War II. It was involved in notable battles such as the Battle of Khalkhin Gol and the invasion of the Philippines. Despite its relatively outdated design by the time of World War II, the Type 89 remained in service due to the lack of more advanced tanks.
