Type 90 75mm howitzer (Japanese)

Description

The Japanese Type 90 75mm howitzer, officially designated as the Type 90 75mm field gun, was developed by the Imperial Japanese Army in the early 1930s. It was introduced in 1930, corresponding to the 2590th year of the Japanese imperial calendar, and was intended to replace the ageing Type 38 75mm field gun in frontline combat units.

The Type 90 featured a hydro-pneumatic recoil system and a horizontal sliding-block breech mechanism. It was mounted on a split-trail carriage, which allowed for greater elevation and traverse compared to earlier designs. The gun was produced in two variants: one with wooden wheels for horse-drawn transport and another with solid rubber tyres and reinforced suspension for motorised towing. The weapon fired a variety of shells, including high-explosive, armour-piercing, shrapnel, smoke, and illumination rounds, with a maximum range of approximately 14,960 metres.

Despite its advanced design, the Type 90 faced challenges in production and maintenance due to its complexity and the high precision required for its components. It saw service during the Second Sino-Japanese War, the Soviet-Japanese Border Wars, and World War II. While it was effective in combat, its operational limitations prevented it from fully replacing the Type 38, which continued to be used alongside it.
