Description
The Japanese Type 92 100mm howitzer was a versatile artillery piece developed by the Imperial Japanese Army in the early 1930s. It was designed to address the shortcomings of previous infantry support weapons, such as the Type 11 37mm infantry gun and Type 11 70mm mortar, which lacked sufficient firepower and range. The Type 92 was introduced in 1932, corresponding to the 2592nd year in the Japanese imperial calendar.
The howitzer featured a short barrel mounted on a split-trail carriage, allowing for both direct and indirect fire. It utilised a hydro-spring recoil system and an interrupted thread breechblock mechanism. Lightweight and manoeuvrable, the Type 92 could be towed by a single horse, although teams of three horses were often employed. Its compact design enabled the crew to reposition it manually over short distances. The weapon fired a variety of shells, including high-explosive and hollow-charge rounds, with a maximum range of approximately 2,785 metres.
The Type 92 saw extensive use during the Second Sino-Japanese War and World War II, proving effective against fortified positions and light armour. Despite its somewhat unconventional appearance, it was well-regarded by Japanese forces for its reliability and adaptability in diverse combat scenarios.
