Description
The Japanese Type 94 75mm howitzer, officially designated as the Type 94 75mm mountain gun, was a versatile artillery piece developed by the Imperial Japanese Army. Adopted in 1934, corresponding to the 2594th year of the Japanese imperial calendar, it was designed to replace the older Type 41 75mm mountain gun. The Type 94 was intended to provide improved firepower, range, and mobility for infantry support in challenging terrains.
The howitzer featured a hydro-pneumatic recoil system and a horizontal sliding-block breech mechanism. It was mounted on a split-trail carriage with detachable spades, allowing for stability during firing. The weapon fired a variety of shells, including high-explosive, armour-piercing, smoke, and illumination rounds, with a maximum range of approximately 8,000 metres. Its lightweight design, at around 544 kilograms, enabled it to be disassembled into multiple loads for transport by pack animals or manual labour, making it highly adaptable for mountainous regions.
The Type 94 saw extensive use during the Second Sino-Japanese War and World War II, proving effective in both offensive and defensive operations. Its reliability and ease of transport made it a valuable asset for Japanese forces, despite being eventually outclassed by more modern artillery designs later in the war.
