Type 97 Chi-Ha Kai Medium tank (Japanese)

Description

The Type 97 Chi-Ha Kai, also known as the Type 97 Shinhoto Chi-Ha, was an upgraded version of the original Type 97 Chi-Ha medium tank used by the Imperial Japanese Army during World War II. Developed in response to the shortcomings of the original Chi-Ha, particularly its inadequate 57 mm gun, the Chi-Ha Kai featured a new, larger turret and a more powerful Type 1 47 mm tank gun. This upgrade significantly improved its anti-tank capabilities, making it more effective against Allied armour.

The Chi-Ha Kai retained the same Mitsubishi SA12200VD air-cooled diesel engine as the original Chi-Ha, producing 170 horsepower and allowing the tank to reach speeds of up to 38 km/h. The tank’s armor was also slightly improved, with thicknesses ranging from 8 to 33 mm, providing better protection against small arms fire and shrapnel. The Chi-Ha Kai had a crew of five, including a commander, gunner, loader, bow gunner, and driver.

The Type 97 Chi-Ha Kai saw extensive service in various theatres, including China, Southeast Asia, and the Pacific islands. It was involved in notable battles such as the Battle of Corregidor and the invasion of the Philippines. Despite its improvements, the Chi-Ha Kai was still outmatched by many Allied tanks, but it remained a significant part of Japan’s armoured forces throughout the war.
