Description
The T6 flotation device was an experimental system intended to make the M4 Sherman amphibious during opposed landings. Large buoyant structures were attached around the tank’s hull, while propellers provided movement through the water. Unlike the better-known Duplex Drive system, the T6 used rigid flotation chambers rather than a collapsible canvas screen. The equipment allowed a Sherman to approach beaches under its own power, then discard portions of the device before fighting ashore. Trials demonstrated the potential value of delivering tanks early in an assault, but the system was bulky and affected handling. It saw limited use, with conventional landing craft remaining the principal method of deployment.
