Vf67 Tobruk bunker with Pzkpfw. 38T turret (German)

Price range: £2.52 through £18.00

Description

The VF‑series Atlantikwall defences were small, quickly constructed fortifications designed to reinforce the German coastal defence system without the time or resources required for full Regelbau bunkers. The designation VF (Verstärkt Feldmäßig, “reinforced field‑type”) reflected their purpose: simple, functional structures that could be built in large numbers to strengthen weak points along the coast.

Many VF bunkers served as light infantry position and provided protected firing points for machine‑gun teams, enabling defenders to sweep beaches and approach routes with sustained fire. Their compact design made them easy to conceal within dunes or behind natural features, helping them survive Allied reconnaissance.

Other VF structures were more defensive, offering basic protection from artillery and air attack. These bunkers were often linked to trenches or open firing positions, allowing infantry to move quickly between cover and combat roles.

Some VF types were equipped with heavier armaments, including repurposed turrets from captured (and usually obsolete) tanks. Positioned to cover likely landing zones, they worked in conjunction with minefields and obstacles to create interlocking fields of fire intended to halt or delay armoured vehicles.

The VF series also included command and logistical bunkers. The VF35 served as an observation or command post, typically placed on higher ground to give artillery spotters a clear view of the coastline. The VF69 was used for ammunition storage, built partially underground to protect munitions while keeping them close to frontline positions.

Beach obstacles formed a crucial extension of these defences. Belgian Gates—large steel frames mounted on rollers—were deployed to block landing craft and channel vehicles into kill zones. Alongside these stood mines, stakes, hedgehogs, and ramps designed to damage or overturn landing craft. Together, these obstacles and the VF bunkers created a layered defensive system intended to slow, disrupt, and fragment any Allied assault long before it reached the main defensive line.
