Vickers Light Tank – ‘Dutchman’ (Dutch)

Description

The Vickers Light Tank “Dutchman” was a British-built export variant of the Vickers-Carden-Loyd Model 1936, ordered by the Royal Netherlands East Indies Army (KNIL) in the late 1930s. A total of 73 units were commissioned, but only 20 were delivered to Java before the outbreak of World War II. These tanks featured a hexagonal turret, bolted armour, and were mechanically similar to the British Light Tank Mk IV. They were armed with a single machine gun and operated by a two-man crew.

In KNIL service, the Dutchman was deployed for reconnaissance, infantry support, and colonial defence, particularly in Java and Borneo. Despite their light armour and modest firepower, they proved effective in jungle terrain and narrow roads. During the Japanese invasion of 1942, Dutchman tanks were used alongside Marmon-Herrington CTLS tanks in the defence of West Java, reportedly achieving “considerable success” in delaying enemy advances.

The remaining undelivered units were seized by the British Army and repurposed for training and airfield defence, where they retained the nickname “Dutchman”. One surviving example is preserved at the Bovington Tank Museum in the UK.
