Description
The French VUDB (Voiture de Prise de Contact) was a pioneering armoured vehicle that served as a precursor to modern infantry fighting vehicles. Berliet designed and manufactured the vehicle in the late 1920s, following a request from the French Cavalry for a fast and agile reconnaissance vehicle. The VUDB had a distinctive feature that set it apart from other armoured cars of its time: it allowed its crew to fire their weapons from inside the vehicle, through multiple ports on the front, side and roof. This gave the VUDB an advantage in combat situations, as it could engage enemies without exposing its crew to enemy fire.
The VUDB had a four-wheel drive system that enabled it to traverse rough terrain and cross obstacles. It also had a rear steering wheel that improved its manoeuvrability. The VUDB carried two 7.5 mm machine guns; one mounted on the front and one on the rear. It could carry up to six soldiers, including the driver and the commander. The VUDB had a top speed of 65 km/h and a range of 300 km.
The VUDB entered service in 1930 and saw extensive use in the French colonies, especially in North Africa and Indochina. It participated in several conflicts, such as the Rif War, the Second Sino-Japanese War and the Franco-Thai War. The VUDB proved to be reliable and versatile, but also suffered from some drawbacks, such as its thin armour, its limited firepower and its high maintenance costs. Over time, more advanced armoured vehicles, such as the AMR 33 and the AMD 35, gradually replaced the VUDB, but some remained in service until the end of World War II.
