White-Laffly AMD 50 Armoured Car (French)

Description

The White-Laffly AMD 50 was a French armoured car developed in the early 1930s by retrofitting worn-out First World War White AM armoured car hulls onto new Laffly LC2 truck chassis. Originally built on American White Motor Company frames with armoured bodies by Ségur & Lorfeuvre, the vehicles were modernised to extend their service life. The AMD 50 (Auto-Mitrailleuse de Découverte) retained the original riveted steel hull and turret but gained improved mobility and reliability through its new 50 hp Laffly petrol engine, achieving speeds up to 60 km/h and a range of 300 km.

Armament consisted of a 37 mm Puteaux SA18 gun and a 7.5 mm FM 24/29 machine gun mounted in a turret, with additional mounts for anti-aircraft use. The vehicle featured dual driving positions—forward and rear-facing—for rapid withdrawal, and could accommodate a crew of four. Armour thickness reached up to 8 mm, offering modest protection against small arms fire.

A total of 98 conversions were completed between 1931 and 1934. By 1940, most AMD 50s were deployed in French colonies such as Algeria, Tunisia, Indochina, and Lebanon, with only a few remaining in metropolitan France. Though obsolete by the Second World War, they served in reconnaissance roles and were briefly used by German forces for training.
