Churchill AVRE Mk.IV with Bobbin (British)

Description

This engineering variant of the Churchill AVRE carried Type B bobbins—large cylindrical reels of canvas matting. Designed for beach landings, the bobbins were unrolled to create stable tracks over soft sand or mud, enabling following vehicles to avoid bogging down. The AVRE retained its 290‑mm Petard mortar for demolitions, giving it both engineering and combat capability. Used during the Normandy landings, it proved vital in overcoming terrain obstacles under fire. Although cumbersome, the bobbin system contributed significantly to the success of amphibious operations by improving mobility for tanks and support vehicles on difficult coastal ground.
