Dummy tank (Japanese)

Description

Japanese defenders on Okinawa used dummy tanks and other decoys to mislead American observers, attract fire and conceal the location of genuine weapons. Constructed from wood, canvas, earth or salvaged materials, these replicas only needed to appear convincing from a distance or in aerial photographs. They were positioned near roads, revetments and defensive areas where an armoured vehicle might reasonably be expected. Some incorporated logs or pipes to imitate gun barrels, while camouflage helped disguise rough construction. Although simple, a successful dummy could waste artillery shells, delay reconnaissance or create uncertainty. Such deception reflected Japan’s need to compensate for limited armour, fuel, mobility and air support.
