Description
The Type 89 was a light mortar (or grenade discharger) used by Japan during WWII. Erroneously called “knee mortars” by some Allied troops due to it’s base plate shape, it was fired in the same manner as standard Allied light mortars. Unlike Allied doctrine, the Japanese issued 3 Type 89 mortars per platoon making it the most numerous support weapon available to the infantry.
