Engineer Flamethrower team – moving (Soviet)

Description

The Soviet Union employed the ROKS-2 and ROKS-3 flamethrowers during the Second World War, primarily issued to infantry engineer units for close-quarters combat and bunker-clearing operations.

Introduced in the mid-1930s, the ROKS-2 was designed with camouflage in mind—its fuel tanks were disguised as a backpack, and the flame projector resembled a Mosin-Nagant rifle to avoid drawing sniper fire. It carried around 9 litres of fuel, pressurised by nitrogen, and had an effective range of 25–45 metres.

The ROKS-3, introduced later, simplified production by removing the backpack disguise but retained the rifle-like projector. Both models were operated by two-man teams and saw action in major battles such as Kursk and Berlin. Though heavy and limited in duration (6–8 seconds of flame), they were psychologically devastating and tactically effective in urban and fortified environments.

The ROKS series remained in service throughout the war and were even used post-war by Soviet allies.
