LVT(A)-1 (US)

Description

The LVT(A)-1 was an armoured amphibious vehicle developed to provide fire support during American landings in the Pacific. Based upon the LVT-2, it carried an enclosed turret armed with a 37mm gun and additional machine guns. Its tracked hull could travel from landing ships, cross reefs and beaches, then continue inland over soft ground. The vehicle’s armour protected the crew from small-arms fire and shell fragments, but remained vulnerable to artillery and anti-tank weapons. LVT(A)-1s supported assaults in the Marshall Islands, Marianas and elsewhere. Their gun proved useful against light fortifications, although stronger Japanese bunkers encouraged the development of heavier armed amphibious tanks.
