Army M2A1 105mm medium howitzer (US)

Description

During World War II, the M2A1 105mm howitzer was the standard light field artillery piece used by the U.S. Army. Originally developed in the 1920s and refined in the 1930s, it entered full production in 1941 and quickly became a reliable and effective weapon.

The M2A1 was designed for indirect fire support, providing infantry units with powerful artillery capable of engaging enemy positions at long range. It fired high-explosive, smoke, and illumination rounds, making it versatile in both offensive and defensive operations. With a maximum range of approximately 12,300 yards (11,270 metres) and a rate of fire of up to 10 rounds per minute, it was highly effective in suppressing enemy forces.

The howitzer was deployed in all major theatres of WWII, including North Africa, Europe, and the Pacific. It played a crucial role in battles such as D-Day, the Battle of the Bulge, and the island-hopping campaigns in the Pacific. Its mobility allowed it to be towed by vehicles or mounted on self-propelled platforms like the M7 Priest.

The M2A1 remained in service beyond WWII, influencing later artillery designs and continuing to be used in conflicts such as the Korean and Vietnam Wars.
