Marmon Herrington CTMS-ITB1 Light tank (Dutch)

Description

The Marmon-Herrington CTMS-ITB1 was a light tank developed in 1941 by the American company Marmon-Herrington for export to the Royal Netherlands East Indies Army (KNIL). Designed as a three-man vehicle, it featured bolted armour, a vertical volute spring suspension, and wider tracks than its predecessor, the CTLS. Powered by a 174 hp Hercules RLXDI inline-six petrol engine, it reached speeds of up to 40 km/h and weighed approximately 11.3 tonnes.

Its main armament was a 37 mm automatic cannon from the American Armament Corporation, paired with a coaxial .30 calibre Colt machine gun. Up to two additional machine guns could be mounted in the hull. Despite its compact size, the CTMS offered reasonable mobility and firepower for colonial defence, though it lacked a radio and had limited armour protection.

Of the 194 units ordered by the KNIL, only 31 were delivered to Dutch Caribbean territories due to the Japanese occupation of the East Indies. Others were diverted to Latin American countries under Lend-Lease, including Cuba, Ecuador, Guatemala, and Mexico. In Dutch service, the CTMS saw limited use in Suriname, where mechanical issues and personnel shortages hampered operations. By the late 1950s, all units were retired or scrapped.
