Description
The Mercedes L4500A 4.5-tonne truck, adapted as a Flakwagen for the 2cm Flakvierling 38, was a German wartime improvisation designed to provide mobile anti-aircraft support. Based on the robust all-wheel-drive L4500A chassis, this vehicle offered a reliable platform for mounting the quadruple-barrelled 2cm Flakvierling 38, a weapon renowned for its high rate of fire and effectiveness against low-flying aircraft and lightly armoured ground targets.
The conversion typically involved reinforcing the truck bed and installing a rotating mount for the Flakvierling, allowing for rapid targeting and deployment. Some variants featured armoured shielding for the crew and gun, though protection remained minimal. The L4500A’s off-road capability and payload capacity made it well-suited for this role, especially in mobile flak units tasked with defending convoys, supply lines, and rear-area installations.
