Description
The Mercedes L4500A 4.5-tonne truck, adapted as a Flakwagen for the 3.7cm Flak 37, was a German wartime conversion designed to provide mobile anti-aircraft support. Built on the reliable all-wheel-drive L4500A chassis, this vehicle offered a sturdy platform for mounting the 3.7cm Flak 37—a semi-automatic anti-aircraft gun with improved range and hitting power compared to the lighter 2cm systems.
The conversion typically involved reinforcing the truck bed and installing a rotating mount for the Flak 37, allowing for flexible targeting of enemy aircraft and light ground threats. Some variants featured armoured shielding for the crew and gun, though protection remained minimal. The L4500A’s off-road capability and payload capacity made it well-suited for mobile flak units operating in varied terrain.
