Description

Based on the chassis of a Type 97 Chi-Ha, the Chi-Ha Naval 120mm SPG was a prototype armoured vehicle developed by the Japanese Imperial Navy towards the end of World War II. A single example was discovered by US forces at the Yokosuka SNLF base.

Featuring a dual-purpose Type 10 120mm naval gun mounted on a heavily reinforced Chi-Ha chassis, it was more like a mobile gun emplacement than a tank. The crew were exposed, with no armoured casemate or gun shield, and even firing the gun would put considerably strain on the chassis and mounting.

The Naval 120mm SPG may have been designed for amphibious landings or rapidly moving heavy AA/AT support around, but it is unlikely to have been a very successful vehicle. The ultimate fate of the single prototype is unknown.
