Description
The Shinyo was a small, fast motorboat developed for Japanese suicide attacks against Allied shipping. Usually operated by one man, it carried a large explosive charge in its bow and was intended to ram an enemy vessel at high speed. Shinyo boats were hidden in caves, tunnels and camouflaged coastal shelters until an invasion fleet approached. They were deployed in considerable numbers around the Philippines, Okinawa and the Japanese home islands. Limited seaworthiness, unreliable engines and overwhelming Allied firepower reduced their effectiveness. Nevertheless, they represented Japan’s increasingly desperate reliance upon suicide weapons during the war’s final stages and posed a threat to landing forces.
