Description
Torii gates traditionally mark the entrance to a Shinto shrine or a transition from ordinary ground into sacred space. Usually formed from two upright pillars supporting horizontal crosspieces, they appear in wood, stone, concrete and metal. Their colour and design vary, although bright vermilion examples are especially recognisable. During the Pacific War, torii gates formed distinctive landmarks near villages, roads and religious sites across Japan and occupied territories. Fighting, bombardment and military construction damaged or destroyed many, while others survived amid surrounding ruins.
