Type 91 105mm howitzer (Japanese)

Description

The Japanese Type 91 105mm howitzer, also known as the Type 91 10 cm howitzer, was a light artillery piece developed by the Imperial Japanese Army in the late 1920s. It was officially adopted in 1931, corresponding to the 2591st year of the Japanese imperial calendar. Designed to replace the ageing Type 38 150mm howitzer, the Type 91 was intended to provide improved mobility and firepower for field artillery regiments.

The howitzer featured a hydro-pneumatic recoil system and an interrupted screw breechblock. It was mounted on a split-trail carriage with detachable spades, allowing for stability during firing. The weapon fired a variety of shells, including high-explosive, chemical, armour-piercing, and shrapnel rounds. With a maximum range of approximately 10,771 metres, it was capable of delivering effective fire support over long distances. Its rate of fire ranged from 6 to 8 rounds per minute.

The Type 91 was widely used during the Second Sino-Japanese War, the Soviet-Japanese Border Wars, and World War II. Its lightweight design and reliability made it a valuable asset in diverse combat scenarios. Despite its somewhat crude appearance compared to Western counterparts, the Type 91 remained a key component of Japanese artillery forces throughout the Pacific War.
