Description
The Type 92 Cavalry Tank, also known as the Type 92 Heavy Armoured Car, was the first indigenous tankette developed by the Imperial Japanese Army. Designed in the early 1930s by the Ishikawajima Motorcar Manufacturing Company, it was intended for use by the cavalry for scouting and infantry support. The Type 92 was a response to the need for a more mobile and versatile vehicle that could operate effectively in the rough terrain and poor road conditions of Manchuria and China.
Weighing around 3.5 tonnes, the Type 92 was powered by a Franklin/Ishikawajima Sumida C6 air-cooled inline 6-cylinder gasoline engine, producing 45 horsepower. It could reach speeds of up to 40 km/h (25 mph) and had an operational range of 200 km (120 miles). The vehicle’s armour was relatively thin, with a maximum thickness of 12 mm, providing basic protection against small arms fire.
The Type 92 was armed with a 13 mm Type 92 heavy machine gun and a secondary 7.7 mm Type 97 light machine gun. Despite its limitations, the Type 92 proved to be a valuable asset for the Japanese cavalry, offering improved mobility and firepower compared to earlier armoured cars. A total of 167 units were produced between 1932 and 1939.
