Description
During WWII Italy produced a number of vehicles of the “Semovente” type.
Semovente translates as “self propelling” and all the vehicles were essentially fixed casemate mobile guns similar to the StuG and SU vehicles used by the Germans and Soviets.
The naming of each type was simple -“Semovente” was just followed by the designation of the gun it carried. So, the “Semovente 90/53” carried the Cannone Da 90/53, a 90mm weapon with a length of 53 calibres.
Many different variants were produced, from those mounting field guns and similar such as the 75/17 and 75/34 up to those with much larger calibre howitzers like the 105/25 or even heavy AA pressed into service as AT weapons such as the 90/53.
