Description
The Type 92 Ni-Ku was a medium artillery tractor developed by the Imperial Japanese Army in the early 1930s. Designed to tow heavy artillery pieces, the Ni-Ku was a crucial component of Japan’s mechanized artillery units. The tractor was produced in two main models: Model A and Model B.
Model A, introduced in 1932, was powered by a Sumida 6-cylinder petrol engine, while Model B, introduced in 1936, featured an Isuzu 6-cylinder diesel engine. The Ni-Ku had a maximum road speed of 16 km/h for Model A and 20 km/h for Model B. The vehicle’s dimensions included a length of 4.30 meters, a width of 2.0 meters, and a height of 2.58 meters, with a ground clearance of 0.29 meters. The combat weight was 8,000 kg for Model A and 8,350 kg for Model B.
The Ni-Ku was primarily used to tow the Type 89 15 cm cannon and other heavy artillery pieces. It had a crew of seven and was equipped with a winch for recovery operations. The tractor’s robust design and reliable performance made it a valuable asset in various theatres of war, including China and the Pacific islands.
